The Environmental Protection Act imposes a general wastewater treatment obligation for properties not connected to a public sewer system. New properties must fulfil the requirements for wastewater systems.
The dimensioning of a wastewater system for a recreational home depends on the volume and quality of water consumed. At the very simplest, water from a sauna cottage is taken through a sauna well to the soil for absorption. A soil-based treatment plant is required for processing dishwashing and kitchen waters.
Recreational homes that have a washing machine and water toilet, for example, require systems similar to those in permanent residences.
Old properties must prepare a report on wastewater treatment
Properties must prepare a report on their wastewater treatment. If a property does not have a water toilet, a report must be prepared by 1 January 2008. The documents must be kept on the property and presented to authorities on demand.
