Preventing the generation of waste is the best kind of waste management. It starts with a purchase decision and your own actions. Is a product of good quality, durable and repairable, and can it be used for another purpose after its service life? For example, you can reduce the amount of waste by purchasing products with less packaging, favouring refillable packages and using a shopping bag or basket.
Keep the following in mind when shopping:
• Do you need the product?
• Is the product durable and lasting?
• Does the product carry an environmental label?
• Has the packaging material been manufactured in a way that saves the environment?
• Can the product be repaired?
• Can you purchase a service instead of the product?
• Can the product be acquired for shared use or rented?
Tip
When shopping, choose products that are suitable for recovery after their service life and will not end up in landfills.
Recycling and recovery
Sorting and recovery of waste are arranged differently at different locations. In many municipalities, biowaste, recyclable paper, recyclable cardboard and mixed waste are sorted separately. The designations and methods of processing also vary by location. There may also be separate receptacles for burnable waste, recyclable glass and recyclable metal outside your house or at a nearby collection point.
The easiest way to recycle is to order receptacles and emptying services for recoverable waste from L&T. A tidy and well-lit waste room is a crucial incentive for sorting.
