We take occupational safety seriously

”The most rewarding aspect of my job is that attitudes towards occupational safety have changed. Nowadays occupational safety issues are taken seriously, and people familiarise themselves with these matters. For example, employees and supervisors call more often than before in order to ask for advice,” says occupational safety delegate Pentti Läärä.

Pentti Läärä had his start at the company as a cleaner in 1996. “Around a year after that I became a service director while simultaneously joining the occupational safety committee. I became a occupational safety delegate in 1998. As shop steward, I also represent the personnel.”

“My job entails the monitoring of occupational well-being, accidents and hazard evaluation as well as site visits and employee interviews. I work in partnership with the employer, occupational health services and customers. I have attended dozens of training courses related to the field along the way. You must always be aware of changes to the law and the increasing requirements.”

Pentti participated in the development of on-site hazard evaluation. He also participated in the preparation of the occupational health programme, Sirius, the drug programme and the sickness fund. Moreover, Pentti has designed and implemented occupational safety card training.

”I think L&T is a great employer to work for. We have the opportunity to educate ourselves and advance if we so desire, and the company takes care of its personnel in a variety of ways.

”We should keep in mind that occupational safety is in the common interests of us all. Everyone should take some responsibility and take safety issues and co-workers into consideration. With proper planning, you can do a job properly while avoiding hazards.
