Wastewater treatment on sparsely populated areas

Wastewater treatment obligation for properties not connected to sewer networks

The Environmental Protection Act imposes a general wastewater treatment obligation for properties not connected to a public sewer system. New properties must fulfil the requirements for wastewater systems.

Old properties must prepare a report on wastewater treatment

Properties must prepare a report on their wastewater treatment. If a property does not have a water toilet, the Environmental Protection Act requires a report to be prepared by 1 January 2008. The report must be kept on the property and presented to authorities on demand.

You should contact a professional with regard to the preparation of guidelines required for the report. L&T can find out about the regulations and other issues related to wastewater treatment and assess any modifications needed. The wastewater systems of properties not connected to sewer networks must comply with the requirements of the Decree by 2014.

Renovation to comply with the Decree and the needs of your family

The systems of almost all properties having a water toilet will require renovation. A large part of properties with no water toilet will also require some measures.

The modernisation of a wastewater system is planned by investigating which systems are suitable for the property and its residents and compliant with the Decree. L&T and municipal authorities can answer any questions about wastewater management and its modernisation.

Alternative systems:

• simple soil treatment
• soil filtering
• absorption into the soil
• soil filtering improved by dephosphorisation
• soil filtering and a closed tank for toilet water
• closed tank for all wastewater
• small treatment plant.

Wastewater systems need regular maintenance

After regular monitoring of operation, the most common type of maintenance is emptying of a tank, well or sediment trap by L&T’s sewage suction lorry. In addition to normal maintenance, our professionals can help you with sewer imaging and pipe condition assessment.
